What You'll Do

Position Summary The R&D Machinist will support the R&D department by programming, setting up and operating CNC mills to produce precision machined prototype parts.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work closely with engineers and technicians to develop high-quality parts and provide crucial input on design for machinability
  • Read solid models and engineering drawings using CAD (Solidworks)
  • Competently program and navigate Fanuc and Haas CNC controls
  • Ability to utilize all milling capabilities to achieve efficient machining of parts and high-quality surface finishes
  • Design rigid and repeatable work-holding fixtures, perform machine and tool setup, and create detailed documentation of processes
  • Operate machinery to deburr workpieces as well as prepare raw material for machining
  • Proficiently use MasterCam software to perform 3D surfacing toolpaths, design fixtures, effectively machine parts, and optimize machining routines
  • Solid understanding of machining various materials, including competency in calculating feeds and speeds to ensure long tool life and quality surface finish
  • Conduct pre and post inspection on all machined parts using precision measuring instruments
  • Participate in periodic product development and design review meetings
  • Support brainstorming of new, creative product / process concepts and ideas
  • Work independently on assignments and be able to multi-task on several projects
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Education/Qualifications/Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in CNC machining and programming, Fanuc and Haas preferred
  • Mastery of 3D surfacing, high-speed machining, and tool path optimization
  • Ability to program and machine complex and high tolerance components on CNC Mill with 3 and 4-axis capability
  • Materials: stainless steel, mild steel, tool steel, aluminum, plastics, copper, brass, and silicates
  • Passionate about prototyping and machining
  • Strong work ethic and highly motivated
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Well organized and strong verbal communication skills

 

Physical Environment/Working Conditions

  • Requires standing for long periods of time, climbing up/down ladders, sitting, bending, grasping, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching are generally required to perform the essential functions of this position. Ability to reach above shoulder height as well as below the waist and periodically walk to other areas of the building and production facility as directed.
  • Must be able to work in a loud environment.
  • Ability to use keyboard and lift/file documents throughout the day.
  • Ability to perform safe execution of repetitive motions, including repetitively lifting/carrying up to 60 pounds.
  • Visual and hearing abilities as appropriate for safe execution of job duties, functions and tasks.
